Oso Flaco Lake
Today was unseasonably warm for mid-February on the Central Coast. There was virtually no wind and temperatures were expected to reach the mid-80's at the beach so that's where we headed!
Just a couple miles north of Guadalupe is the turn off to Oso Flaco Lake. Drive west for 3 miles through productive farmland and the road ends at the Oso Flaco Lake parking lot. From here the hiking trail begins under a lush canopy of trees favored by birds and butterflys and other little critters.

Soon you'll be able to glimpse Little Oso Flaco Lake to the north and the much larger Oso Flaco Lake to the south. Here the trail turns into a boardwalk which actually crosses Oso Flaco Lake and heads for about a mile all the way to the beach.

When you reach the beach, you'll be rewarded with one of the most stunning views you could possibly imagine. Miles and miles of uninhabited shoreline stretch in either direction.

We love to walk south, cross Oso Flaco creek and go all the way to the Santa Maria river before turning around and coming back. Take plenty of water and pack a lunch if you'd like ... you really can spend most of the day out here.
There are thousands of acres to explore amongst these dunes and this section of beautiful California Central Coast shoreline.
